You’ve hired a bookkeeper before. Maybe twice.
And twice, it didn’t work.
The first time, you went with the well-known shop in town. Small, but everybody knew their name. Sounded safe. It wasn’t.
The second time, you swung the other way—a husband-and-wife team running things out of a home office. Smaller still. More personal, you figured. Surely that fixes it.
It didn’t.
Both teams meant well. They probably still do. But the books were a mess, they went quiet for weeks at a time, and eventually you realized they were in over their heads on things they should’ve flagged months earlier. You were more frustrated the second time than the first.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you when you’re bookkeeper-shopping: size was never the problem. Both times.
You’d think a big firm means big systems, big accountability, big competence. Sometimes. You’d think a small firm means personal attention, care, someone who actually knows your business. Sometimes.
Neither is guaranteed. A big-name firm can have accounts on autopilot, junior staff who’ve never talked to you, and books that are technically compliant and functionally useless for decision-making. A small shop can be warm, responsive, and still not know what they don’t know—which is worse than not knowing, because you won’t find out until it costs you.
The size of the logo tells you nothing about the quality of the work behind it.
If you’re back on the bookkeeper hunt—third time, fifth time, whatever number you’re on—stop asking “how big is your firm.” Start asking these instead:
None of these questions care whether the firm has two employees or two hundred. They care whether the person doing your books actually knows what they’re doing and communicates like an adult when something’s hard.
This business owner is still running her own show day to day. We stepped in on the consulting side—assisting her to cleaning up what her last firm left behind, giving her information to get the books in order, and we are a resource for her to ask the questions she used to have to guess at.
The books aren’t a mystery anymore. Not because we’re bigger or smaller than anyone she’s worked with before. Because we do the six things on that list above, every single time, and we tell her the truth when something’s off instead of hoping she doesn’t notice.
Stop shopping by size. Start shopping by competence, communication, and whether they’ll tell you the truth before it becomes a problem.
If you’re tired of guessing whether your current bookkeeper (big, small, or somewhere in between) actually has it handled, that’s what Done-For-You Monthly Bookkeeping is for. We take the books off your plate completely—reconciled, accurate, and explained in plain English every month. No guessing whether someone’s ghosting you. No finding out in April.
