I’m going to save you a few years of frustration and under-earning right now:
Hourly pricing is a trap for service providers.
I know why people do it.
It feels fair, familiar, and easy.
“I’ll just charge $X per hour.”
Cool. Except that model actively punishes you for getting better at your job.
Here’s what no one tells you when you start pricing hourly:
The better you get, the less money you make.
Read that again.
When you’re new:
Then you gain experience.
You get efficient, spot issues faster, and know exactly what to do.
And suddenly:
That makes zero sense.
Your clients are not paying you for the time it takes.
They’re paying you for:
Hourly pricing forces you into a constant trade-off:
More money = more hours.
And last time I checked, you:
It also creates weird incentives:
None of that helps you build a sustainable business.
Sure.
Clients also understand paying per session, per project, per month, or per result.
What they don’t want is uncertainty.
Hourly pricing makes it impossible for clients to know:
That’s why retainers and flat fees work better—for both sides.
When you shift away from hourly pricing, you start charging for:
For example:
“I charge $___ per month and this is what’s included.”
Now:
This is exactly why I don’t price bookkeeping hourly.
I don’t get paid because it took me X hours.
I get paid because:
And yes—I can do in an hour what might take you 10 or 20.
That’s not a reason to charge less.
That’s the entire point.
This is where most service providers get stuck.
They say:
“I’ll switch to flat pricing once I’m more experienced.”
Here’s the thing:
You don’t gain confidence by undercharging.
You gain confidence by owning your value.
You can:
But staying hourly forever will keep you capped.
Hourly pricing has a hard ceiling.
There are only so many hours you can work.
And once you’re booked out, your options are:
None of those are great.
When you price based on value and scope:
That’s how real businesses are built.
In conclusion, hourly pricing feels safe.
But it quietly limits your income, your growth, and your sanity.
You are not being paid for time.
You are being paid for what you know.
Start pricing like it.
