Building Community Through Appreciation: Why I Hosted My First Referral Partner Event

Small Business Tips

At Lookout Bookkeeping, referrals aren’t just good for business—they’re the heartbeat of how we grow and support our community. That’s why I recently hosted our Referral Partner Appreciation Event: not as a marketing ploy, but as a way to say a genuine “thank you” to the people who help keep this small business thriving.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what the event was all about, why I think gatherings like this matter, and some key moments that really stood out.

Why Host a Referral Partner Event?

I’ve always believed that staying top-of-mind with your network isn’t just about popping into inboxes. Sometimes, it’s about creating space to connect without an agenda—to laugh over charcuterie, swap business updates, and strengthen trust.

“What gave you the idea to do this?” someone asked me at the event. And my honest answer? I just wanted to connect. To keep my face, name, and services in front of people in a meaningful way—and to help others connect, too.

Creating a Room Full of Good Energy

The vibe in the room was exactly what I had hoped for: relaxed, engaged, and filled with people who genuinely enjoyed each other’s company. We had guests from all sorts of industries—CPAs, business mentors, and lenders together for happy hour.

There were stories swapped about the wild world of banking two-factor authentication, lessons learned while offboarding clients, and even one about a dog that crashed a meal train (you had to be there). People didn’t just come and go—they stayed, mingled, laughed, and made new connections. One guest said:

“People stayed longer than I thought they would… I love that.”

As a host, that’s the best compliment I could ask for.

A Space to Build Stronger Partnerships

The magic of a referral event like this isn’t just about the thank-you gifts (although yes, we did have custom swag!). It’s about giving everyone the chance to understand each other’s work more deeply—how we serve clients, what values we bring, and what makes us different.

Several conversations organically turned to things like:

  • How lenders and bookkeepers can collaborate for cleaner financing processes.
  • Why following processes is critical in scaling a bookkeeping business.
  • What it means to refer with confidence—knowing your referral partner won’t drop the ball.

One conversation that stuck with me was with a banker who said she’s working on a business acquisition loan that most banks wouldn’t touch—because there’s no collateral and the buyer hasn’t owned a business before. But she saw the potential, and her approach reminded me exactly why the right partnerships can open the door to creative solutions.

The “Why” Behind Events Like This

My goal is simple: to make Lookout Bookkeeping synonymous with integrity, reliability, and community. And part of that means nurturing the relationships that refer clients to me—the ones who trust me enough to put their reputation on the line when they say, “Call Melissa.”

Hosting an appreciation event like this:

  • Keeps those partnerships warm and active.
  • Encourages new cross-referrals between guests.
  • And reminds us that we’re all working toward the same goal: helping business owners thrive.

“This was so fun,” one guest said as she left, gift bag in hand. “People will talk well about this… it should be a yearly thing.”

You know what? I think she’s right.

Want to Be Part of the Next One?

If you’re someone who works with small business owners—whether you’re a CPA, lender, consultant, or something in between—and you believe in doing business with clarity, kindness, and professionalism, I’d love to connect.

Reach out and let’s see if we’re a good referral fit. Because good work deserves a great network behind it.
